No police tape around the crime scene?

No CSI team wandering around collecting evidence?

No television reporters and all their entourage?

Just a lone Planetarium employee walking up the sidewalk on his way to work as everyone got into a few police cars and drove off.

Yeah, the ending was lame. And Jim's parents smiling knowingly at one another.

Meanwhile, the sh*t still hasn't hit the fan about the other boy's death.

I'm not familiar with police procedure in the 50s (or any other era) in LA (where was Sgt. Friday when he was needed?) but I thought the ending was way too easy, all wrapped up in a box with a bow on top. ta da. No, no. and everybody lived happily ever after. The only one who missed the boat at the end was Plato's maid/nanny who obviously lost her job.

Yeah, pretty sure that's down to it being the 1950s and police procedures being very different. They knew who killed him and so why would they need CSI? The only question really would probably be a police investigation into whether they should have killed him as his gun wasn't loaded and he was no threat to anyone but they would probably conclude that the police weren't at fault.

I found the ending really sad and quite unnecessary.. Plato didn't need to die and I don't feel it really added anything to the film. The aspect I found most odd was that Judy was in love with Jim what, 5 hours after her boyfriend had been killed.. Pretty quick!!!

I agree. It's been awhile since I saw the movie, but Plato did shoot at the police earlier during that scene, so they were operating under the reasonable assumption that he had a loaded weapon. If there had been an investigation, the policeman probably would not have faced any sort of pentalty.

I agree he should have told the police but he thought he could defuse the situation and it all happened so fast so he was not thinking that far ahead like people said he is just a teen and there a code between us young people to not betray or rat out your mates so he did not want to say he pulled out the bullets also the reason he ran was because they turned on the lights and he panicked because he was a disturbed kid and was upset by them like how did you miss that !

I agree as well. It's things like that that made the ending seem rushed.

It's also not clear why Plato all of a sudden decides to run out the door and onto the steps - unless he actually wants the cops to shoot him?

Bingo, Plato was on the edge, psychologically. That's the only excuse I can think of.

He looks around in a way that could be taken as confusion, but this actually fits better. It explains why he didn't talk to the police in the last shot. Which he would do if he had no idea what was going on.

Of course he still could be looking around in confusion after hearing about the incident from a policeman. I mean some employees do start their work at dawn. He probably wasn't hourly, he was working at the observatory, and seemed quite fond of his work.

it's an existentialist moment of how the world go on even after the end of the world
